DDIS FAQs

The Distance Diagnosis and Identification System (DDIS) was developed to support UF/IFAS Extension in serving growers and homeowners through rapid identification and diagnosis of plant and pest problems. DDIS provides a collaborative communication platform that enables first detectors, Extension specialists, and diagnosticians to share information and work together to address plant health issues. The system supports the diagnosis and identification of plant diseases, insects, weeds, mushrooms and other fungi, invasive species, and problems related to plant management, physiology, and nutrients.

It is important to submit samples through DDIS rather than as email attachments. DDIS provides several key advantages:

  1. Standardized diagnostic forms ensure that a complete set of information is collected, which is essential for accurate diagnosis.
  2. Submission history allows county Extension agents to review their previous submissions and use the data for reporting purposes.
  3. Sample and response tracking enables DDIS to track submissions and responses and support institutional reporting, capabilities that are not available through email.
  4. A searchable database creates a digital archive that supports future research, education, and Extension programming.

All UF/IFAS employees who have a digital camera can use DDIS. We're finding that many images for plant and insect IDs are quite satisfactory without using a microscope, though microscope images are necessary in some situations.

DDIS uses a standard UF/IFAS lab/clinic form to collect essential information for diagnosis and identification. The more complete the information provided, the better chances of a successful diagnosis and identification.

You may submit samples to UF/IFAS diagnostic clinics and specialists registered with DDIS. After logging in, you can view the list of available clinics and specialists.

You may upload up to six images with your initial submission and add more later when revising the sample. Take multiple photos and select the best ones to clearly illustrate the plant or pest symptoms. We recommend including photos from different angles, with both wide-view images showing the overall context and close-up images highlighting specific symptoms or details.
Log in to DDIS and view the sample. In the DDIS Toolbox, grant permission to the county agent. The sample will then appear on that agent's "My Samples" list.
