for a Sustainable World
September 2000 - VOL. 7 NO. 9
Features
A Chicken House Dust Buster ... 7 A new electrostatic
space charge system (ESCS) removes airborne dust in poultry areas to
reduce potential for transmission of salmonella and other pathogens.
Looking at the Big Picture ... 9 Macro-scale
measurement can improve prediction accuracy for soil properties,
hydraulic characteristics and erosion parameters. The term refers to
determining soil properties and hydraulic characteristics in an area
or volume of soil larger than a core sample, soil column or
lysimeter. It can also involve measuring erosion and runoff
parameters in an area larger than an experimental plot.
Spectroscopic Analysis ... 11 Near infrared
spectroscopy has been used as an analytical technique for nearly a
century. But improved understanding of agricultural and biological
materials, chemical processes and reactions is making the method
even more important to today's manufacturing and control
applications.
Calling Dr. Internet ... 13 The Distance Diagnostic
and Identification System (DDIS) was recently developed jointly by
extension agents, specialists and Institute of Food and Agricultural
Sciences (IFAS) Information Technologies faculty at the University
of Florida. The Java-based distributed system provides a computer
environment to quickly identify and cure plant, insect and disease
problems.

Last Word (reader opinion) - In the Pipeline ... 33 The
U.S. trenchless pipeline renovation business has matured in the past
10 years. Although more cities are willing to consider this
construction option, only 30 percent of the pipe renovation work
needed is done using trenchless methods. Yet city officials,
engineers, the public and businesses continue to want the least
disruption and inconvenience in their daily lives. Factors that
will provide momentum for the market are: aging underground
infrastructure, more work needing completion using less funds,
environmental protection, increased congestion in urban and suburban
centers, faster technology and information transfer, privatization
of utility companies and growing water, energy and waste handling
needs.
